Larijani: The Idea of a Diplomatic Office is Mysterious

Ali Larijani, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, said that the proposal of initiating an American diplomatic office in Iran might be an “uncanny idea.”

According to today’s (Sunday) report by Iran’s governmental news agency IRNA (Islamic Republic News Agency), Mr. Larijani added that he is not going to put “serious value” on this issue because there might be a “mysterious intention” behind it.

The statements by the speaker of the Iranian parliament were made a day after Condoleeza Rice, the United State’s Secretary of State, issued a statement hoping to initiate this office in Iran.

Ms. Rice said that this office can be a base for American officials to establish contact with the people of Iran.

For the first time, a plan to initiate an office to preserve American interests in Iran is being discussed in some American media sources.

At the present moment, there is an active department preserving American interests in the Swiss Embassy in Iran, but all of this office’s employees are Swiss.

Diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States were severed after the 1357 (1979) revolution and the occupation of the American Embassy in Tehran by way of “the university student followers of the Imam’s path.”

Mr. Larijani also stated that Iran needs to change its strategy in the region.

With this said, he did not explain the changes of strategy that Iran has to create in the region.

The statements made by the speaker of the Iranian parliament are being discussed one week after a meeting between the U.N. Security Council and Arab officials took place.

At the end of the meeting, Ms. Rice said that the Arabs are worried about the extravagant nuclear ambitions in the region.

Iran reacted to this statement by announcing that its nuclear activities will not account to danger in the region.
