Hillary's First Official Visit to the Dominican Republic

The official visit of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signifies an important event not only for her vote of confidence and her personal ties with the Dominican nation, but also for the issues so important to bilateral relations that such a distinguished visitor will discuss with President Leonel Fernández.

Although the State Department has not divulged Ms. Clinton’s agenda, they have revealed that she will speak with the Dominican leader about the situation in Haiti as well as the Summit of the Americas, which will take place Friday in Trinidad and Tobago with the presence of President Barack Obama.

It is known that Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, are frequent travelers to the Dominican east coast, whose beaches have served as the backdrop for innumerable vacations and the forging of many good relationships, but this is the ex First Lady’s first official visit.

Ms. Clinton will also discuss the question of cooperation between Washington and Santo Domingo on the war on drugs, a touchy subject that will involve the participation of Haitian President René Preval in light of the fact that his nation has become an active drug trafficking port for the U.S. narcotics consumer market, the largest in the world.

The Dominican Republic extends the warmest welcome to an exceptional woman who, along with her family, has demonstrated a profound appreciation and respect for the nation. We wish her both a pleasant and beneficial stay.
