The Republicans are really going to extremes. Obama makes a good joke about Romney’s dog and Romney spokesperson Ryan Williams immediately counters with the accusation that Obama’s behavior is beneath the office of the president.
These Republicans have no sense of humor whatsoever. Really. None whatsoever. Obama makes a joke about Romney’s former Irish Setter — and a pretty good one, at that — and the Republicans immediately start complaining. Romney spokesperson Ryan Williams even went so far as to say that Obama’s behavior was beneath the dignity of the presidential office. Come on! Let’s at least leave the church standing in the village square. Or perhaps more appropriately, let’s leave the dog strapped to the roof of the car.
What prompted all this? Obama made a brief campaign stop in Iowa, gave a speech promoting renewable energy, and noted that several months earlier, Romney made the observation that nobody could drive a car with a windmill attached to it. Obama’s response to that: “Now I don’t know if he’s actually tried that. I know he’s had other things on his car.”
Obama was referring to an old story from the 1980s when the Romney family went on a vacation and put their dog Seamus into his carrier and strapped it to the roof of their car.
Ever since the episode became public knowledge, jokes have scarcely ceased. Obama’s little joke counts as one of the more innocent ones as you can see for yourself here: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/73618.html
