The genetically modified organism controversy has flared up again. The thousands of tons of GMO-contaminated rice that were seized in Mersin was the last straw for many people, and for some agencies as well.
The U.S. Consulate’s agricultural attachés have a very important task: to defend American agricultural products no matter the cost. Every year, U.S. agricultural lobbies give millions of dollars to politicians to get their continued support for American agricultural companies.
In order for the U.S. to maintain agricultural superiority, the commercial attachés ensure that U.S. government guaranteed loans are given for U.S. agricultural products.
GMOs Have Big Problems
Support for GMO agriculture in the U.S. started bearing strange fruit two weeks ago when a court case was opened against the GMO agribusiness monster Monsanto.
Despite serious health problems, the courts can’t stop the commercial activities of the companies that produce GMO crops and sell GMO seeds. In other words, the courts have enough power to put a person to death, but not enough power to stop Monsanto’s production of GMOs.
This is because the production and sales that the U.S. has developed with very large investments are restricted all over the world, and world public opinion absolutely opposes genetically engineered or modified foods. As a result, there is a lot of misinformation.
In the last week we also organized a similar campaign on the U.S. Embassy and Consulates. According to many newspaper reports, a person only called “a senior U.S. official” is criticizing our Ministry of Agriculture and finds Turkey to be conservative on the GMO issue.
What’s It to You, Brother?
You can ask this question, but don’t. The goal is to load up Turkey with the genetically modified agricultural products from the U.S. The goal of the attaché is starkly obvious, so why are the [Turkish] journalists allowing themselves to be used for this purpose? Why are they inviting this misinformation?
For example, this “one U.S. official” says that even in the European Union, 0.9 percent GMO content is allowed, but that Turkey is showing no tolerance. Notice the language that is being used! Tolerance …
No matter what words were used, it was a lie. The 0.9 percent value only relates to the rate of contamination that is acceptable in order for non-GMO (note, NOT GMO) corn, soy and other products to be approved by European Food Safety Authority, the EU’s food safety organization. If a GMO product is not allowed into the EU, it means that zero tolerance is being applied.
Whether it’s 0.1 percent or 50 percent, they are banned from the EU.
So What’s the Problem?
The lobbyists are building up their money reserves again. Their main goal is to ensure that GMOs are accepted by the public so that GMO products (I don’t want to call them food) that bombed in U.S. agricultural markets are forced into Turkey.
There is also a strategic angle to this effort. Whoever controls the world’s agriculture also controls world politics. Especially with the increase in disasters caused by global warming, there have been serious fluctuations in the supply of agricultural products. Therefore, stores of agricultural products are disappearing. This means that countries that have a reduction in their food dominance also lose their political power.
This is an easy weapon for the U.S. to wield; if it can be said, it is making every effort to end world agriculture. Nevertheless, our journalists also jump in and report everything they hear, without checking to see if it is true or not.
