When Obama took office five years ago, his desire was to unite the nation, not divide it. A majority of Americans had had enough of the self-obsessed and uncompromising policies of George W. Bush. The people chose Obama, who promised to change Washington’s direction. In fact, Bush’s successor tried to reintroduce compromise and bipartisanship into national politics. That was a total failure and a serious mistake. Had Obama acted more boldly in 2009 and 2010, when Democrats still had a congressional majority, America would be better off today.
Obama naturally promised the American dream of a brighter future. But every president says that and some of them really believe the dream can become a reality.
Obama’s speech didn’t do much for the dreamers. His ideas are still enormous, but he didn’t tell us how he plans to turn them into reality. He can’t count on the Republicans to help him do it. Since 2010, they have repeatedly proven that they have absolutely no interest in helping Obama do the work necessary to make life better for the American people. They will continue their obstruction until the day another Republican sits in the White House.
