Companies Are Off To Fish for Investors in the US

Polish entrepreneurs will seek business partners in the U.S. On Tuesday, together with President Bronislaw Komorowski, a large trade mission is going to the States. The aim of this mission is to encourage America to invest in the Polish fuel sector and buy Polish food.

The conference will be attended by representatives of the fuel industry as well as the chemical and energy sectors. There will also be representatives of companies from the IT, research and development, agri-food, aviation and engineering and logistics sectors. Along with these, there will be representatives of technology parks, special economic zones and regional institutions.

The Tempting Fuel

One of the key objectives of the trip will be to seek partners to invest in the Polish fuel and energy sector. “We want to encourage Americans to participate in large energy infrastructure projects. These projects, such as the Gazoport terminal in Swinoujscie or the Gdansk Naftoport, are already being implemented, or — like the petrochemical complex in Gdansk — they are being planned,” said Deputy Minister of Economy Ilona Antoniszyn-Klik.

“Potential contractors from the United States are to be encouraged by the improvement of operational conditions for American companies interested in the exploration and production of natural gas from conventional and unconventional sources, which was announced by the Ministry of Economy. We shall present the state of play on the new legislation regarding this issue,” says Antoniszyn-Klik.

All of this is to make the United States consider Poland one of Europe’s largest investment markets in the fuel and energy industry, as well as the chemical industry. One of the main events of the mission will be the so-called Round Table Meeting on Energy scheduled for September 24 in New York — a meeting of Polish companies with American investors in the fuel and energy sector and the chemical industry.

Food from Poland

An important purpose of the visit will also be the promotion of the economic potential of Eastern Poland, including the agri-food sector. Americans are expected to be attracted by our capacity for food production. Poland is the fourth country in the E.U. in terms of arable land, the second in terms of crop sowing, and the eighth in terms of grassland area.

“The advantage of the sector, which may be of interest to the U.S., is the ability to quickly adapt to a range of needs and expectations of customers. The modern base for processing, in turn, which Polish companies possess, guarantees a high, reproducible and very strictly controlled quality,” says the vice president of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIIZ), Monika Piątkowska.

On Thursday, a Polish-American Investment Dialogue conference will be held in New York, with the participation of President Bronislaw Komorowski. It is organized by PAIIZ, together with the Polish-American Business Club and the Department of Trade and Investment Promotion. It is to showcase Poland as a sound country to invest in, and to encourage American investors to make decisions.

Another aim of the visit is Polish participation in a forum that will present and promote the innovative potential of the Visegrad Group countries, including young technology companies.

More and More Business Trips

The number of missions in the past several months has been increasing exponentially. Entrepreneurs travel along with the Polish president; they also go on trips organized by the Ministry of Economy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both departments cooperate on these issues very well, which even in the recent past seemed unlikely.

Strengthening the role of economic diplomacy is also to be seen in the activities of Polish diplomatic missions. As announced on Monday by the Polish Foreign Ministry, last year their staff responded to more than 75,000 questions submitted by entrepreneurs. Diplomats have supported 133 major transactions and investments, and successfully intervened 328 times in situations where Polish companies were discriminated against, such as during auctions.

This year, a system has been introduced which will evaluate the activities of Polish embassies in terms of their support for businesses operating abroad. Soon there will be yet another novelty. This will be a satisfaction rating system for companies, which will allow them to see whether they are pleased with the support provided for them. As announced by the Polish Foreign Ministry, the intensification of activities dedicated to economic diplomacy is also to be expected on a voivodeship level.
