U. S. President Joe Biden, a devout Catholic, attended Mass with his family. At the exit of the church the Argentine connection took place.
Daniela Moreira from Córdoba, Argentina, moved to the United States 10 years ago and presently employs 150 people in a pizza shop and in four branches of her deli, Call Your Mother. At one of these shops, the staff had to fill an order for a VIP client: U. S. President Joe Biden.
Biden, the second Catholic president of the United States after John F. Kennedy, stopped to pick up an order of bagels — cream cheese and vegetables — from the Georgetown branch of Call Your Mother, near the church where he had just attended Mass.
“Apparently it was the granddaughter, a client of Call Your Mother who really likes it and suggested it,” Moreira told House Radio.* Biden was accompanied by his son Hunter and two granddaughters.
Barely a week had passed since Biden’s inauguration when a caravan of armored cars — black and shiny — pulled up to the Georgetown location. “The secret service got out first, and the one who got out to pick up the order was Hunter Biden,” Moreira said in reference to the presidential son.*
Moreira commented that in just five minutes there was a crowd “stacked” at the front door, and that the staff were especially careful with each order they completed, just in case one ended up on the White House breakfast table.
“Living in D.C., one never knows how powerful the person next to you is,” Moreira acknowledged, before commenting that the illustrious customers “left 90% or 95% tips” for the order, when the custom in the U.S. is 20%.*
Just a month later, the Córdoban deli story is still pleasant, compared to the other news from the White House: Biden ordered the first military airstrike of his administration, which left 22 combatants dead in an area of northeastern Syria, on the border with Iraq.
