Trump and His Entourage

Former U.S. President Trump will probably run for the White House again after the midterm elections, in which the Republicans are expected to do well. That is not good news.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump will “probably” run for reelection to the White House in 2024. But before he announces his candidacy, he will wait to see the results of the midterm elections, during which the sitting president’s party has regularly lost its majority in Congress since the 1990s. This year, moreover, the extreme candidates that Trump endorses could gain seats and thus push the political spectrum farther to the right.

For U.S. President Joe Biden and the Democrats, the defeat that they expect to face in the midterms does not just mean political standstill, since Biden will only be able to govern through executive orders. Domestically, the Republicans will only continue to fuel the already heated atmosphere in the country.

Biden has more room to maneuver in foreign policy, so that in the next few years, trans-Atlantic relations, which have recently improved, will probably suffer no damage. But Germany and other EU countries should not rest on the laurels of their recent accomplishments.
