At a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, X and Tesla boss Elon Musk asserted that a Democrat victory would mean an end to U.S. democracy. The opposite is the case.
Donald Trump would only have had to say fall on your knees and beg and Elon Musk would have done it. This is how the 45th U.S. president described the tech billionaire’s visit to the White House two years ago while Trump was in office.
“When Elon Musk came to the White House asking me for help on all of his many subsidized projects, whether it’s electric cars that don’t drive long enough, driverless cars that crash, or rocket ships to nowhere, without which subsidies he’d be worthless, and telling me how he was a big Trump fan and Republican, I could have said ‘drop to your knees and beg’ and he would have done it,” Trump recalled. You would have thought that was the end of their friendship.
That would have been logical if Trump and Musk were not two of the most opportunistic, egocentric and power-obsessed people in America. Trump’s MAGA campaign has waged an open disinformation war against its own people for years. A critical public, as it once was on Twitter, which banned hate speech and lies, blocked the objectives of this battle.
The ‘Dark Side’
At the end of 2022, the world’s wealthiest man bought the communications giant Twitter for $44 billion because he was concerned about a purported “left-wing opinion dictatorship” and he aimed to keep Twitter politically neutral. Two years later, during a Trump rally staged in Butler, Pennsylvania, site of the attempted assassination, Musk described himself as “Dark MAGA.”
Trump rewarded the reinstatement of his banned Twitter account with the prospect of big tax cuts for the super rich and cabinet posts. Musk apparently thanked him publicly with algorithms that flooded everyone with right-wing Trump content. At the rambling election campaign speech on Saturday, Musk lied that the Democrats are taking away Americans’ right to vote, while in truth, the Democrats are expanding those rights. This is the peak of absurd theater by two dangerous men. Musk warns that “President Trump must win to preserve the Constitution. He must win to preserve democracy in America,” saying this could be the last election if Trump loses. Trump has already warned his voters that it will be the last election if he wins.
