America’s change in attitude regarding Palestine’s bid to become a member of United Nations is allegedly due to Barack Obama’s fear of losing. Israel’s refusal of Palestinian membership in the United Nations has made Obama change his mind.
“Obama has changed his attitude to not support Palestine’s struggles because he fears that he will not be reelected as president of the United States for a second term in 2012,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Triyono Wibowo at a press conference at Gedung Nusantara III MPR-DPR Complex on Saturday, Sept. 23.
According to Wibowo, in 2010 Obama supported Palestine joining the United Nations. However, he changed his stance due to reasons related to the 2012 U.S. presidential election. “In 2010, Obama indicated that the world would accept Palestinian statehood in 2011. But in fact, the United States has not accepted Palestine as a member of the United Nations,” said Wibowo.
Wibowo has indicated that there is pressure from Israel on Obama. If Palestine becomes a member of the United Nations, the status of Palestine and Israel will be the same, but Israel may not be able to bomb Palestine like they are doing now.
“If Palestine becomes a member of the United Nations it will change their position for conducting negotiations with Israel. Negotiations between Palestine and Israel will become negotiations between two sovereign and equal countries. U.N. membership is Palestine’s objective,” explained Wibowo.
