"You Are Fired": A Popular Saying in the U.S.

In America, there is nowadays a popular saying, “You are fired”, which reflects the deep change within American society.

Since the bursting of the financial bubble in Wall Street, the crisis has extended to the field of the American substantial economy.

A haze of unemployment is now hanging over America, and the words,“You are fired”, are now threatening many American citizens. The latest statistics reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor, shows that non-agricultural employment fell by 240,000 in October, and the unemployment rate rose to 6.5%, the highest level in 14 years. The “American dream” described by President Bush a few years ago…“With more money in your pocket”, “ I is easier for young people to afford the down payment on a home of their own”… became merely a mirage. And “You are fired” became popular among the public.

In fact, this “popular spell” has fallen upon many VIPs. The FBI has been investigating fraud and searching for the individuals responsible for the crisis. Recently a series of insider trading scandals of Wall Street have exploded, and there has been a stream of resignations of many in top management. All Americans are expecting that the new administration will be of sufficient intelligence and resolve to solve the financial problems and let them hear “You are fired” no more. The more the public expect, the greater the responsibilities of President-elect Obama’s become. As a result a tough challenge facing Obama, who will come into power during this crisis, is how to solve the rising unemployment problem.
