Fidel Castro Ironizes about the Guayabera that Obama Will Show off in Cartagena

The Cuban ex-president, Fidel Castro, ironized today about the guayabera: a Caribbean shirt originating from Cuba, which Barack Obama, the American head of state, will show off at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia – the island, however, is “prohibited” from participating.

“What’s interesting, dear readers, is that Cuba was prohibited from being in that meeting: but the guyaberas, no. Who can keep from laughing?” writes Fidel Castro in the latest publication of his “Reflections,” published this past Monday in the Cuban media.

In his article, Castro mentions the guayabera that Colombian designer Edgar Gomez is preparing for President Barack Obama, who will wear the piece of clothing at the continental appointment held in Cartagena in front of the “very just” complaint from Argentina about the Falkland Islands.

Castro also highlights that Latin America “is far from being a choir of countries begging for money,” after insisting on his criticisms about the Organization of American States, which he defines as “an institution with an embarrassing history that turned its back on what was left of the dream that the liberators of America had.”

A total of 32 rulers in the region will participate in the VI Summit of the Americas in the middle of this month, an appointment in which, once again, Cuba hasn’t been invited, and in which Ecuador’s president, Rafael Correa, will also be absent, in solidarity with the island.

Fidel Castro, 85 years old, has been retired from power since 2006, when a serious illness made him appoint his brother, Raul, who took definite command of the island in 2008.
