The American Culture Month in Warsaw

The “American Dream” starts on August 24.

The schedule of the events includes exhibitions, movie screenings and meetings with American diplomats and lecturers. It will last from August 24 to September 21. The first week’s theme will be travelling across the USA.

The “American Dream” will start with an exhibition called “USA in Your Lens” at Klubokawiarnia Grawitacja at Powiśle – informed Agnieszka Jakowiecka, the U.S. Embassy Press Office worker. The exhibition is to display photographs depicting the USA that were chosen from works submitted to the photography contest in 2010, organised by Consulate General of The United States in Cracov, the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw and American Corners – Jakowiecka explained. The works will be on display until September 8.

Movie screenings are scheduled on Mondays. Guests will have the chance to see “Broken Flowers” directed by. Jim Jarmuscha, Starring Bill Murray, an American animated comedy „ The Simpsons”, „Citizen Milk” (directed by. Gus Van Sant), starring Sean Penn, the recipient of the Best Actor in a Leading Role Academy Award for this role; and “The Candidate” (directed by Michael Ritchie) Michael Ritchie).

Since September 10 guests will enjoy “America on Screen” exhibition, in which American movies-themed posters made by Polish artists will be displayed. Wednesdays will feature meetings with American diplomats and lecturers of American Studies Center. The first week of the schedule, just as the opening exhibition, will be devoted to travelling across the USA. The first guest of the Wednesday series will be Dorota Warakomska, the author of “Route 66”, traveller and U.S correspondent.

The second week’s meeting, hosted by representatives from the U.S. Embassy, will feature talks about Education System in the U.S. and American studies in Warsaw. In the following week a Deputy Cultural Attaché will focus on multiculturalism and LGBT (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgenders). The last meeting, devoted to the U.S. electoral system, will be hosted by the Head of the American Study Center, professor Bohdan Szklarski.

The schedule will also include feature two family picnics and special meetings with American Football players from “Warsaw Eagles”, “Warsaw Spartans” and members of the Warsaw Student Baseball Club called “Centaurs”. Guests will be served American dishes and have a chance to take part in various competitions.

“American Dream” is embraced by the honorable patronage of the Mayor of Śródmieście District in Warsaw. The project partners are American Studies Center and BestFilm. The organisers of the American Month in Warsaw are the U.S. Embassy and Klubokawiarnia Grawitacja, where some of the events are to take place.
