U.S. Seeks to Isolate China With Korean 'Buffer'

Based on a report in “East Asia Daily” dated September13th, South Korea is preparing its action plan for dealing with an emergency situation with North Korea. It was reported that important personnel from South Korea’s foreign affairs and security areas were visiting the United States last week and consulting with the U.S. on “operational plans of war.” The meeting also touched on the Korean Peninsula “buffer zone” which is to be established without Chinese cooperation.

According to the report, the South Korea-U.S. Security Agreement explicitly stipulates that South Korea is to exercise dominance in the event of the reunification of the Korean Peninsula. Also discussed were issues such as the political situation after the reunification of the Korean Peninsula and how it would affect relations with U.S. and China. The South Korean government official said, “the U.S. also expressed that in handling relations with China, it is necessary to establish buffer zones after the reunification.”
