The Hollywood which applauds Oprah's speech is the same one which applauded Roman Polanski when he won the Oscar for best director for the film “The Pianist” in 2003.
Oprah might do a fine job. But that’s hardly the point. Her job is not politics. Good statesmen and women come not from the boardroom or the green room but from the tough grind of professional politics.
Maybe America doesn’t need President Oprah, but it is a country that is in dire need of swinging away from a destructive patriarchy towards something more matriarchal.
Winfrey’s speech was a blast of feeling. She would make a splendid preacher but that is not what the U.S. needs. It needs an intelligent, highly educated, understated president who understands both the general and specific nature of governing and who will redesign tax rates to lessen inequality.
