The spokesman of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran expressed hope that just as Barack Obama was able to gain the trust of the American people with a promise of change, he will utilize the blossoming international popularity of America toward the reduction of increased global mistrust toward the country.

IRNA, the official information station of the government, reported that Gholam Hossein El-Ham stated that “We hope that just as Mr. Barack Obama was able to regain the trust of the American people with the promise of change, he will bring the establishment of fundamental changes in the United States of America’s approach toward global issues, the respect for human rights and nations and the conclusion of oppression and aggression toward other countries, employing the blossoming international popularity of America towards reducing the increased global mistrust toward his country.”

In his statement, El-Ham said that the unprecedented turnout in this presidential election has indicated that there was an aversion to the implementation of George Bush’s policies in not only the international but also the domestic arena, and this would bring a serious commitment by the American people for change. He added: “The toll and expense of these expanding, futile wars and the tyranny toward the American people has resulted in the grave economic situation for the country, which is the best that Bush could do for the American people.”
