Colin Powell, the former U.S. Secretary of State, acknowledges that the sanctions imposed on other countries by Washington continually reflect the United State's image, it being a symbol of haughtiness and arrogance.

U.S. researchers are of the opinion that the damage caused by weapons of mass destruction is slight in comparison to the destruction and devastation caused by economic sanctions, but the plain truth is that unilateral or UN economic sanctions are unjust, coercive and illegal, as affirmed by experts in international law. It is true that they have a negative effect, have severe consequences and increase the suffering of peoples and countries, but it is also true that they have not achieved their declared goals. Thus, they are being used for colonial ends to impose hegemony and influence and plunder the peoples’ riches, and they are incompatible with the principles of international law and the charter of the United Nations, which prohibits intervention in other countries' internal affairs.

Finally, it is also true to say: We are indeed witnessing a global awakening to avert the danger of those unjust sanctions. The stances of Russia and China, and numerous other countries, toward Syria affirm what we are driving at.
