Iran-US Communication: A Good Omen for the Region and for World Peace
American President Barack Obama held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Obama indicated a desire for a comprehensive solution to its conflicts with Iran. This first contact between the leaders of the U.S. and Iran since 1979 is extremely welcome; it is only through discussion that they can resolve their issues.
The U.S. imposed economic sanctions upon Iran and used every tactic to isolate it in the world, but Iran remained firm to its stance and confronted the sanctions. Obama’s reaching out seems to indicate a positive change in the attitudes of the U.S. authorities. Positive discussions need to be held with Iran regarding its nuclear program — wars cannot solve problems.
America has seen the results of raining explosives in Afghanistan and Iraq; moving toward discussions is extremely welcome. This will also benefit Pakistan; America had been placing obstacles in the way of a Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline. When the situation improves between the U.S. and Iran, different kinds of problems will be removed for other countries.
Pakistan needs to take advantage of the opening of communication between America and Iran to immediately complete the gas pipeline project. Our economic circumstances cannot bear the burden of the heavy fine to be imposed in case of delay.
