The U.S. president is forcing Republicans to either support his destructive approach to politics or to stand against him in order to prevent damage.

With his pardons and his criticism of the COVID-19 relief measures, President Donald Trump is carrying his destructive approach to politics too far. It would, of course, be helpful for the millions of people in need if they were to receive more money, to pay for food for example. But this is not what he wants to achieve. Otherwise, he would have already tried over the past months to have the economic support measures developed accordingly — which would have meant his having to bring the Republicans back on track, instead of playing them for fools, as he is now doing.

Trump and the US Budget: His Veto Endangers the Relief Measures and the US Budget

By threatening to veto the bill, Trump is instead endangering the COVID-19 relief measures and the U.S. budget. His veto would lead to the state grinding almost to a halt and would mean that those in need would be left to cope on their own for the time being. Trump’s aim is obviously to intensify the chaos so that he can remain in power.

Republicans Must Stand Against Him — Trump Is Forcing Them to

Republicans and Democrats can prevent this horror scenario if they rework the relief bill to avoid a veto by Trump. The Republicans should also no longer keep silent in the face of Trump’s approach.

Trying to distance themselves from him, as many have done over the past few days, will not be enough. This will not result in Trump's losing the level of influence necessary. They will have to criticize him, stand against him. At least that is what Trump is forcing them to do.
