The United States, Israel and the West Bank Annexation

The Israeli Knesset's decision to pass a law imposing Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank, paving the way for its formal annexation to Israel, has provoked intense rejection and condemnation from all Arab, Islamic and European countries and from people, in general — particularly from the countries that participated in the Sharm el-Sheikh summit.

In reality, the Israeli Knesset's abrupt decision has ignited severe anger and denunciation across the entire international community, as it is considered a flagrant infringement of the historical rights of the Palestinian people and a deliberate violation of the international law and U.N. Security Council resolutions. Moreover, it represents a clear breach of the peace agreement that was ratified in Sharm el-Sheikh, and which represented a remarkable step on the part of the U.S.

This position provoked an angry, sharp reaction from the U.S. administration, seeing it as a direct challenge by Israel to the American peace plan and the resulting declaration to halt the war on Gaza — a situation which, from the American viewpoint, requires urgent action.

Indeed, the U.S. did not delay its response, as Washington announced its rejection of the Knesset's decision and confirmed that it would not be implemented. President Donald Trump affirmed that Israel's annexation of the West Bank would not happen, stating that he pledged this during his meeting with the Arab and Islamic group at the White House.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio also confirmed that the Israeli decision threatens the ceasefire and the cessation of war which were approved at the peace summit and stated that this decision would not be carried out.

Not only that, but Trump reiterated that Israel would lose all support from Washington if it proceeded with the annexation of the West Bank.

In this context, the question now being raised is this: Are we on the verge of an extreme confrontation between the U.S. and Israel that would put an end to the unwavering support, backing and bias that the U.S. has shown Israel throughout the past years and decades?

This bias has always been evident in the full and direct U.S. support and endorsement of all of Israel's aggressive decisions and actions — a reality that has been and continues to be clear over the past two years during the comprehensive partnership between the U.S. and Israel throughout the aggression and war of genocide on Gaza.

Along with this question and as a follow-up, another question has emerged: Is this contentious stance between the U.S. and Israel merely a phase that will pass, returning things to what they used to be?

In any case, I believe the answer will not be long in coming.
