The U.S. president is promising each American $5,000 if his party keeps its majority. The promise is just as flimsy as many of Donald Trump’s other promises.

Donald Trump is promising every American adult $5,000 on the condition that the Republican Party retains its majority in Congress in the November elections. This appeal to human nature recalls a German saying: “Ill doers are ill deemers.”

The U.S. president offered few details about how he would actually distribute the election gift, worth more than $1 trillion, in the event of victory. He said only that the “Trump dividend” would be set up so that the money would have to be spent in America.

Historically Low Approval Ratings

The $5,000 proposal looks like a straw the president is grasping at to avoid going under in the face of historically low approval ratings. So does his party’s unusual move to hold a convention before the midterm elections. Flimsy as the promise is, it seems almost solid compared with another that Trump made in his speech in Dallas — that the extremely unpopular armed conflict against Iran will end right after the elections.

The party gathering is clearly aimed at mobilizing Trump’s hardcore MAGA followers, not at drawing potentially undecided voters into the party’s camp. Strong-arm tactics may well find favor with this audience, as may the presumption of renaming bodies of water around the world after America or even after its leader. The idea of calling the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” however, contains two ironic twists.

For one thing, Trump himself previously made the mistake of calling the strait the “Strait of Iran” when he blasted out a statement prematurely declaring a deal with Tehran. For another, the strait may one day commemorate the 47th president of the United States after all — as the site of a strategic defeat.

Genauso wie insgesamt der in seiner Partei ungewohnte Schritt, vor Zwischenwahlen einen Parteitag abzuhalten. Trotz der Leichtgewichtigkeit des Versprechens wirkt es geradezu solide im Vergleich mit einem anderen, das Trump in seiner Rede in Dallas abgegeben hat: dass gleich nach den Wahlen der äußerst unpopuläre Waffengang gegen Iran enden werde.

Die Parteizusammenkunft zielt offensichtlich darauf, den harten Kern der MAGA-Anhängerschaft Trumps zu mobilisieren, und nicht darauf, etwaige unentschlossene Wechselwähler auf die eigene Seite zu ziehen. Es mag sein, dass bei diesem Publikum Kraftmeiereien Anklang finden wie der Anspruch, Gewässer in aller Welt nach Amerika oder gleich nach dessen Führer umzubenennen. Die Idee, die Straße von Hormus als Trump-Straße zu bezeichnen, enthält allerdings gleich zwei ironische Wendungen.

Zum einen ist Trump selbst einmal der Lapsus unterlaufen, die Meerenge als „Straße von Iran“ zu bezeichnen, als er in einer seiner herausgeblasenen Stellungnahmen voreilig eine Einigung mit Teheran verkündete. Zum anderen könnte es sein, dass die Meerenge dereinst tatsächlich dauerhaft an den 47. Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten erinnern wird: als Ort einer strategischen Niederlage.
