American Political Reporter: Age 13

There are only three more days until the presidential election in the United States. Not only adults are excited about the election; a teenage girl is also absolutely enthusiastic about politics. Though young, she is already the most popular young journalist in her school. She is not only insightful about politics; she has also interviewed Barak Obama and John McCain.

Elizabeth, at age 13, already knows more about politics than most adults. In fact, she is a journalist for a national middle-school, and her task is to report on the 2008 presidential election. Elizabeth said, “I believe that it is important for children to participate in politics. When they grow up, they will have enough experience, and they will know who is a good candidate and be prepared to vote.”

Elizabeth has been interested about politics since she was young. She closely followed the presidential primary last year, and she met every candidate. Elizabeth revealed, “I talked to McCain, I interviewed Romney’s son, and I had a brief conversation with Edwards.” However, when asked about who is the best candidate, Elizabeth affirmed that reporters ought to be objective. She said, “As a reporter, I can only report the facts and the things that happened. I cannot express personal point of view.”

As a teenager, Elizabeth loves drinking coffee, and even stays up all night, thinking about politics. She said, “Before I go to sleep, I would tell myself, no matter who wins the election, who becomes the next president, I’ve reported the presidential election, and I got to meet the president of the United States.”

Elizabeth also expressed that she finds great fulfillment from her job. She is already preparing for her next task, which is attending the inaugural ceremony.
