A Warning That’s Impossible To Ignore

Washington’s new strategy is a thorough proposal for the reconfiguration of the world order.

Yesterday, the Trump administration confirmed that Europe can’t continue to depend on the U.S. militarily or strategically. The new National Security Strategy consolidates the White House’s geopolitical shift and, in clear and coarse language, explicitly relinquishes the continuation of the [U.S.’] relationship with its partners as defined after World War II. It also states that the U.S. will support “patriotic European parties,” referring to nationalist or identity-related groups, to help the Old Continent resist its “current trajectory.” The warning is impossible to ignore — that light is going out and, from now on, the EU will be responsible for guaranteeing its own security and strategic autonomy.

Far from the fluctuations that have characterized Donald Trump on other occasions, this new strategy is a thorough proposal for the reconfiguration of the world order. It warns Europe that it could be facing "civilisational erasure" and predicts that, in 20 years, its nations could lack “economies and militaries strong enough to remain reliable allies.” Also, in a clear nod to Vladimir Putin, it states that “NATO will not expand further.”

Washington’s switch poses an historic challenge for Europe, as José Manuel Durão Barroso, former president of the European Commission, reflected on these pages, stating that the EU needs leaders who understand that this is the time for bold decisions.
