Blue Wave Engulfs Trump
This Democratic “blue wave” brings a tsunami-level turn in tides. One by one, traditionally deep red, staunch Republican areas turned blue: Kansas elected its first Democratic senator in almost a century, Texas saw a stunning turnaround and, in an unexpected upset, South Carolina turned blue. Together with the results from North Carolina and Georgia, this greatly reshaped the political landscape of the American South. The change in control of both the House and Senate and the reshuffling of power in Washington mean that Trump will face serious crises as a lame duck.
Although the victory goes to the Democratic Party, the force behind the blue tsunami came from the American people. As Trump ran amok, Congressional Democrats, in the minority, had little ability to check him. Much of the time, they could only weakly criticize him.
However, the tariff war Trump started has hurt free trade, the war he started with Iran has caused an energy crisis, and the exploitation and coercion he has used to force other countries to invest in the U.S. and “make America great again” have violated the American people’s values of fairness and justice. They have also made life more difficult for people. With a collective will and their votes, the people have weakened Trump’s abuse of power. They are the true arbiters of democracy.
This blue wave in the U.S. is an excellent demonstration for the Taiwanese people: Refusing to be yes-men to those in power is the correct path in the pursuit of democracy.
