Independence Day

Every year on July 4, Americans celebrate Independence Day. I have joined these celebrations several times, both in Turkey and in the USA. We usually go to my friend Martin’s house, located on the north shore of New York’s Long Island. They build wooden huts and set them on fire at night. The purpose is to have the most outstanding fire visible from far away, even from Connecticut. The fire is harmless and safe, as they have it on the beach. There is also police presence during these festivities.

USA is the:

  • land of freedom, opportunity and justice;
  • protector of democracy and human rights;
  • homeland of inventions and new discoveries in the last century; [and]
  • place where thousands of people are applying for citizenship to have better lives.

Americans know that their country will protect them and will clear the roads by sunrise when it snows. Students that come to the USA have a hard time going back to their countries.

…Or not?

The USA is slowly giving up the image of being the land of opportunities. The opportunities are only for the big companies now – which can sell one million iPhones a day, while the entrepreneurs are having a hard time. They succeed only when they come up with a bright idea and can sell it to a bigger company.

Even though the USA is still the land of the free for its citizens, for people around the world, it is slowly losing this title. The European countries have already lost that title. However, I would like the USA to remain the only country that controls the seas, the space and the communications. It is still the land of opportunities for a lot of hopeless people.

Sometimes I write a little harshly in criticizing the acts of the U.S., because I want the U.S. to protect human rights and bring democracy to the world. I want the USA in the old movies.

The world is expecting the land of the free to bring freedom and justice to everyone.

Just like they promised.

  1. There are too many extremely wealthy & sometimes international forces destroying American freedom, and we are struggling to organize against powerful propaganda machines that use patriotism & a distorted explanation of what “freedom” is, in order to crush what political power is still left to the majority of the citizens.

    We are being slowly drained, so I wouldn’t look to the U.S. for any help, in anything. As for leadership, our leaders have become warped versions of Ayn Rand egotists, all following the destructive policies of Ronald Reagan & the new neo-con controlled Republican party, as well as the moles they have infested the Democrat party with , as well.

    I have watched this country mire itself in almost uncontrollable debt & give up it’s industrial lead, in the last 30 years of self-destructive looting we’ve been subjected to…it will not get better any time soon, as most Americans are just too blind to see what’s being done to them, until it hits them personally.
