April 8, 11:59:59 P.M.

On Friday April 8, at 11:59:59 p.m., the U.S. government will run out of money. The news sounds so absolutely apocalyptic that even in the United States some media are calling it the “endgame,” as in game over. The truth, however, is that we are in this situation as a result of the economic actions of President Barack Obama.

For a few months, U.S. citizens endured the extravagance of the occupant of the White House, but last fall the voters, especially the members of the Tea Party, sent to Congress a number of politicians whose main mission is to cut this public spending. They understood that it is a burden not only for this generation, but also for future ones.

In early February, Republican congressmen backed a proposal meant to cut $32 billion in public expenditures. It was a significant reduction, but for supporters of the Tea Party it seemed insufficient, and they were right. Since in the U.S. political parties are obliged to listen to taxpayers, the figure was increased to $61 billion.

In mid-February, the bill stipulating the massive cuts was passed by the House of Representatives. And now we are at a standstill. The Senate, still dominated by Democrats, is unlikely to pass such a measure, and it is even less likely that Obama will accept it.

The Republican response to the slowdown in spending has been, in turn, to block new spending by the Democratic government, so it will run out of money at the time and date indicated above. While members of both parties are struggling to find a solution that will not create problems with their voters, something that unquestionably strikes the mind of any impartial observer is that most American people know more spending does not solve anything. It only creates more problems than already existed. In other words, either the Democratic Party tones down its love of wasting money, or the nation will face very difficult times.

There is no escape, and the Democratic Party could crumble to the ground and be ousted from power if it does not accept that reality. It only has until April 8.
