The Weakest Faith: America’s Contradictory Statements on Iran

In a statement to the CBS network, American defense secretary Leon Panetta said, “The consensus is that, if they decided to do it, it would probably take them about a year to be able to produce a bomb and then possibly another one to two years in order to put it on a deliverable vehicle of some sort in order to deliver that weapon.” He added that “If they proceed and we get intelligence that they’re proceeding… then we will take whatever steps are necessary to stop it.” Asked whether that included military attacks, he answered “There are no options that are off the table.”

American talks about Iranian plans to manufacture ‘nuclear weapons’ is a scarecrow they set up by making contradictory, mutually exclusive statements. One day they say “We are highly confident that Tehran stopped its nuclear weapons program in the fall of 2003.” Other times, they announce that “Iranian military units are working under government direction to develop nuclear weapons.” Then they retract their statement, saying “But we don’t know if they currently plan to develop nuclear weapons.” There is also the latest American intelligence report, which contradicts what the secretary of Defense said and indicates that “all agencies recognize the possibility that this capability may not be attained until after 2015.” The report concludes: “We assess with high confidence that Iran has the scientific, technical and industrial capacity eventually to produce nuclear weapons if it decides to do so.”

There is no doubt that Washington does not seriously intend to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons and that it is using this issue to perpetuate a state of warfare in the region. Washington realizes that Iran is determined to make an atomic bomb, but the purposely obfuscated, contradictory American statements are only a media campaign to cover up any unpleasant surprises. It is a big lie when they say that Iranian nuclear weapons threaten Israel and American interests. Since 1979, Iran has not engaged in any activity inconsistent with nuclear production and obtaining nuclear weapons, which would help them stomach the fact that Israel has nuclear bombs. The attentive observer of the continually growing relationship between the sides of the Tel Aviv—Tehran—Ankara triangle, the dismemberment of the Arab countries and the kindling of the Arab sectarian tendencies can predict the end of the deceptive American statements, and the dreadful future of the region.

What is certain is that it is a waste of time to put confidence in the conflicting American statements on Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. It will have these weapons in a little while, and waiting will not prevent the disaster, let alone allow escape from it.
