Madonna? Please Defend Us, Virgin Mary!

Have you heard that the self-proclaimed Madonna is about to visit our country again? Again, there will be much ado about it, not only in the arena of the National Stadium but also around it.

The last time Madonna visited our country, to the delight of hundreds of thousands of fans, there were many protests. Madonna maliciously decided to sing for us on Aug. 15, the day on which, according to the Bible, Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, ascended into heaven. This historical fact has become an important holiday for the vast majority of Poles. This is the day when we are better, when we say nice things and when we focus on love and brotherhood. It is all because of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ who ascended into heaven. Out of the blue, Madonna appears. Thus, some people were protesting. One of them was Wojtek Cejrowski: “Madonna means the same as Notre Dame, Our Lady and the Virgin Mary. It means the same thing as the Black Madonna of Częstochowa! It refers to the particular person who is the Mother of our Savior and our own.” Also, Janusz Kochanowski, the Commissioner for Civil Rights Protection for the Republic of Poland (Polish Ombudsman), expressed opposition: “There are limits which in the name of freedom of creation shouldn’t be exceeded; these include the need to respect the rights of others, including their religious feelings.”

Despite these voices of indignation, Madonna arrived here. There is no lack of malicious people here who jeered at protesters that Madonna did not even notice. But Madonna knew perfectly well what was going on; perhaps because of that, she wasn’t herself on the stage. She did not have trust in us. As a result, she did not feel as good as at concerts in Buenos Aires or Rio, at least until the time when the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” for her. It broke the ice. And it was beautiful. And everything was fine.

It was so beautiful and good that Madonna is coming back to us. This time she will perform on Aug. 1 in order to not to cause controversy. Just talking about controversy…. Unfortunately, though, when Madonna had her people in charge of reconnaissance, they did not learn that every day is an important holiday in Poland. Either the Ascension or an anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. And Polish media have already known that that there are going to be protests that “some Internet users” have promised to organize. Although the media have not indicated who “some Internet users” are, certainly these are the individuals who will use any excuse to become famous in the world of media and celebrity. On the anniversary of some not significant battlefield; of the first issue of “Janosik” on TV; of the death of St. Dominic, patron of the Order of Preachers; or of the arrival of the first Polish settlers to Australia, there would also be protests if Madonna feels like singing in Poland just on those dates in the future.

In that whole matter, It is not worrying that a handful of mediocre people have already been lurking to shine in front of the cameras. But these cameras may make people worry. Our newspaper will again provide narration of the backwater, showing the influx of Western depravity. Again, people will forget about those tens of thousands who are about to go to the concert, the hundreds of thousands who would like to but cannot and the millions who do not know what the point is. Well, that’s life! If one has a chance to earn something, then the minority can be more important than the majority. In this case, there might be a few dozen people who will protest, as it has always happened, because this is the way they want to live and they have a lot of free time. Perhaps too much.

And our “beloved” press has put the cat among the pigeons, added fuel to the fire and rubbed salt into the wound. There would be no protests, no one would have learned that we have a few renegades, celebrity wannabes in Poland, if there were not those who want to write about them and if our “beloved” press did not inspire them. What’s more, I am sure that even if the dozens of dissidents did not exist, someone would invent them or organize. But why? Because people will be clicking and reading about it. As they are doing that, there will be a lot of discussions over that issue. Without a doubt, prattling cannot be avoided. A few words for our “beloved” media: Many thanks for the freedom, but shut up now.
