As usual, Paul Krugman, Nobel laureate, economist and columnist for the New York Times, is right: The Republicans spend their time complaining about President Obama’s economic plans, yet the 44th administration has set up exactly the kind of economy that the conservatives want.
The policy of the Republicans is the following: cut spending and taxes with a chainsaw. For the past two years, this is what President Obama’s policies have been about. This is mainly due to Republican pressure from Congress, including the House of Representatives, which they control. This campaign is a huge manipulation: It’s like taking the American people’s bladders for lanterns. Clearly, some must believe that President Obama’s spending policy is responsible for 8.2 percent unemployment, yet he was specifically prevented by Congress from conducting an investment policy which would change the situation radically. One has to side with the voters who believe that although the policies under George Bush have failed miserably; this is exactly what is needed to put America back on the road to recovery. But the House of Representatives blackmails the Obama administration to keep tax cuts for the rich.
The Republicans want to scare Americans into believing that the Obama administration will lead the country in the same direction as Greece. Yet, the lack of government investment has produced an opposite effect: an anemia resembling Japan in the 1990s and 2000s. However, the White House was unable to explain its policy and especially to identify those responsible for the state of the economy. The best argument for the Obama campaign is just to say that it has implemented the economic policy of the Republicans and that there is evidence that it does not work. This might as well keep Mitt Romney from being in the White House.
