The Oscar Results Are In: Triumph of 'Gravity,' Pizza and Twitter Record-Breakers

In Los Angeles, the most prestigious film awards — the Oscars — have begun. AIF.ru will tell you which of the stars came with their mothers, how the ceremony broke Twitter and who got their golden statuette.

March 2 was the 86th award night for the Oscars in Los Angeles. Those watching were in for intrigue and surprise. For instance, the statuette for best male actor was given to Matthew McConaughey, while Leonardo di Caprio was once again left with nothing to show for it. All the while, two contenders with the most nominations (but who had been nominated in 10 categories) got completely different results: “Gravity” was given seven awards, while “American Hustle” ended up with empty hands.

AIF will also tell you about the events of interest which happened over the course of the most prestigious film awards in the world.

The Triumph of “Gravity”

The real winner of the Oscars was the film “Gravity,” directed by Alphonso Cuaron. The film was given seven golden statuettes, for best director, visual effects, film editing, cinematography, soundtrack, sound editing and sound mixing.

The drama “12 Years a Slave” was the most successful. It was given the award for best film of 2013, while also taking the award for best supporting actress and best adapted screenplay.

I Like the Gloss Over Paris

One of the most intriguing moments of the entire ceremony had to do with Leonardo di Caprio. Everyone was trying to guess whether he would finally get his golden statuette of a knight with a sword. The actor had already thrice been a contender for an Oscar, but to no avail. So it would be a fourth time; the award for best actor would go to Matthew McConaughey for his role as an HIV-positive cowboy in “The Dallas Buyers’ Club.” Di Caprio gave a kiss on the cheek and his best to his victorious rival.

Disappointment awaited the camera crew of the film “American Hustle.” The criminal tragicomedy was a contender for the Oscars for 10 categories, just like “Gravity,” but unlike Alphonso Cuaron’s techno-thriller, it didn’t get a single award.

The 2 Million Tweets

In the break between the award-giving ceremony, Ellen DeGeneres, the American actress and comedienne who was hosting the Oscars, informed viewers that she was preparing to publish a tweet which was to be the most popular for the service, ever. DeGeneres invited several actors to take a picture together and, right as it was happening, published the picture on her Twitter account. Next to her on the published selfie, you can see a smiling Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Bradley Cooper (whose photo it was in the first place), Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts and other stars.

The post received more than 2 million retweets, which made it the most popular published post for Twitter ever. As users noted, following the tweet’s posting, DeGeneres’ account stopped working — evidently it couldn’t take the strain of so much activity from other users. The host joked, saying that “they broke Twitter.”

The previous record had been held by Barack Obama, whose re-election tweet garnered more than 800,000 retweets.

Spills and Thrills during the Oscars

The ceremony didn’t come without its falls. Twenty-three-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, who last year received an Oscar for best actress for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook” and was nominated this year for best supporting actress for “American Hustle,” fell on the red carpet, almost taking out another guest of the ceremony. The actress was helped by her colleague Nicholas Holt, and a policeman who was standing close by.

A year ago, a similar situation had occurred, when Lawrence, in a long and extravagant dress, rushing up to the podium to receive her award, fell right on the steps. Once again, the actress chose a floor-brushing dress, but perhaps one not quite as extravagant.

A Pizza Straight to the Studio

Right in the middle of the evening, Ellen DeGeneres, as a joke, suggested that they order a pizza. All were in favor. After some time, a delivery man appeared with three boxes. Of course, there wasn’t enough for everyone, but the atmosphere for viewers became that much better. Brad Pitt got plastic plates out for everyone, while DeGeneres herself, once the pizza was finished, went around the hall to get money for the order. Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt and producer Harvey Weinstein had to foot the bill. Lupita Nyong’o, who received an Oscar for best supporting actress, paid for it in lipstick.

To the Oscars with Your Mother

This year, the awards ceremony saw a few actors come with their mothers. As goes the tradition, accompanying Leonardo Di Caprio was Irmelin Inderbirken — his mother — who had accompanied him to the most recent Golden Globes. Di Caprio’s colleague from “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Jonah Hill, was nominated in the category of best supporting actor, and also came with his mother. However, the award didn’t go to him, but rather to Jared Leto, whose supporters were even more numerous. Leto himself came with his brother. After getting his Oscar, Leto thanked his mother and said that she taught him how to dream.

The red carpet was also graced by Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey’s mother and Charlize Theron — the co-host for the ceremony.

The Oscar winners are as follows:

Best film: “12 Years a Slave”

Best Director: Alphonso Cuaron (Gravity)

Best Actress: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)

Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto (The Dallas Buyer’s Club)

Best Foreign Film: “The Great Beauty”
