Obama vs. the People of Syria

Obama has decided to strongly support the Syrian opposition. But who exactly is he going to support?

Strongly arming the opposition will prolong the war even further. No one likes the Syrian regime, not even the Russians who still support it. But what is Obama really trying to do? To help the Syrian people? Certainly not. The regime will not be overthrown any time soon. Does he really think that the so-called “moderate” Islamic opposition will be able to defeat the radical Islamic opposition? Events on the ground indicate quite the opposite. The so-called moderates are caught in a vise between radical Islamists and government troops. When the moderates have disappeared, government troops will eliminate the radicals. Or at least they’ll try to.

So what? You have to conclude that the United States has an interest in prolonging instability in the region.

This war, bordered by Iraq, Turkey and Israel, with all of their regional consequences, is excellent for arms dealers. The American military industries are the primary exporters of arms worldwide.

This war allows the maintenance of a certain pressure on the countries in the region, like Russia and Iran, which have better things to do with their money than spending it on further securing their borders.

This war is a war of influence between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

This war is a war for oil and natural gas.

This war belongs to Israel, whose government is more than happy to see its strong Syrian neighbor weakened.

A war to help the people of Syria? Come on. If the American government really wanted to help Syrians, it wouldn’t arm the opposition. It would play the peace card with the Syrian regime.
