XXL Cars for America

German automakers report record sales. All-terrain vehicles drive the business. Americans like flashy and powerful cars.

A conclusion by Ferdinand Piëch states that he understands car markets in Europe, China and Brazil, but not in the United States. Some time ago, it dawned upon the Volkswagen patriarch that he only has limited market opportunities in the land of unlimited opportunity with the most technologically souped-up cars sporting the words “Made in Germany.” American car buyers always complain about too little space, and should there be any doubt, too few cup holders. More than others, BMW and Mercedes have made good business thanks to their prestige among well-to-do clientele.

Accordingly, German auto makers drive self-assured on Monday to the Detroit Auto Show with newly corrected models — here, the BMW 6 Series in a high-performance version, and there, the flashy Mercedes GLE, a brand new mix of coupe and sports utility vehicle. Piëch has stated his pleasure that Audi has imagined a car in the bracket of extra-class with its massive Q7, whose XXL dimensions will satisfy space-spoiled Americans.

America’s auto market determines the welfare and woe of the German manufacturer. The beginning of the year points to German manufacturers continuing their joyride unrestrained.
