During her speech on Thursday, a few days away from the end of the primaries, Hillary Clinton launched an attack on Donald Trump. She called upon the “common sense” of Americans to avoid electing the Republican candidate, which would be a ‘”historic mistake.”
Her campaign team had promised a “major speech” on the “threat” of Donald Trump. And on Thursday, in San Diego, California, Hillary strove to methodically slam the Republican candidate, accused of being “someone who doesn’t understand America or the world.” Point by point, the former secretary of state mocked and criticized the property magnate’s position on various issues: anti-immigration, anti-Muslim diatribes, calls to torture terrorists and execute their families, and ambiguous speeches on nuclear proliferation. Clinton stressed, “Donald Trump’s ideas aren’t just different – they are dangerously incoherent. They are not even really ideas – just a series of bizarre rants, personal feuds, and outright lies.”
In a calm voice and an even tone, the former first lady presented as stunning a contrast as possible. It is a contrast of substance but also of form, with Donald Trump depicted as irritable, bad-tempered and unstable, and therefore incapable of fulfilling the duties of president and, above all, of commander in chief. “We cannot put the lives of our young men and women in uniform in Donald Trump’s hands,” declared Clinton. “This is not someone who should ever have the nuclear codes,” she added, asking the American voters: “Do we want his finger anywhere near the button?”
”Historic Mistake”
This solemn speech, which was spoken in front of around 200 supporters, on a stage ornately decorated with 19 American flags, marks a turning point in the presidential campaign. Prior to this point, Hillary Clinton had never insisted on the danger represented by Donald Trump and his ignorance of world affairs. “Making Donald Trump our commander in chief would be a historic mistake,” she stated. “He is temperamentally unfit to hold an office that requires knowledge, stability and immense responsibility.”
Further signaling the former secretary of state’s interest in opening a new phase in this campaign, even though the primaries are not finished, with several states, including California, set to vote next Tuesday, Hillary Clinton has not said a word about her Democratic rival Bernie Sanders, as though the Vermont senator is no longer in the equation. Bernie, irritated at this oversight, directed a rough jab to his rival. He began his statement by saying, “I agree with Secretary Clinton that Donald Trump’s foreign policy ideas are incredibly reckless and irresponsible,” before adding scathingly: “But when it comes to foreign policy, we cannot forget that Secretary Clinton voted for the war in Iraq, the worst foreign policy blunder in modern American history, and that she has been a proponent of regime change, as in Libya, without thinking through the consequences.”
Donald Trump made no attempt to defend his political positions. As usual, the billionaire preferred to respond with a personal attack on Twitter: “Bad performance by Crooked Hillary Clinton! Reading poorly from the telepromter {sic)! She doesn’t even look presidential!”
