President Donald Trump announced on April 14 that he would temporarily suspend funding to the World Health Organization. 트럼프는 WHO의 대표적인 실패 사례로 “중국으로부터 다른 나라로의 여행을 제한하는 조치에 반대한 것”을 들었다. 하지만 중국은 코로나19가 우한에서 발병하자 신속한 봉쇄조치로 사태 확산을 막았다. WHO도 ‘물리적 거리 두기’ 가이드라인을 제시해 코로나19 확산 속도를 늦추는 데 기여했다. 반면 트럼프는 코로나19 확산에 안이하게 대응하다 미국이 확진자·사망자 1위국이라는 오명을 쓰게 했다. 뒤늦게 코로나 확산의 책임을 WHO 탓으로 돌리는 것은 엉뚱한 곳에 화풀이하는 격이다. 오는 11월 대선을 의식한 행동이라는 비난이 나오지 않을 수 없다.

WHO의 코로나 대응이 미덥지 않은 것은 맞지만 지금은 그 역할이 어느 때보다 중요하다. 미국의사협회도 “WHO 지원 삭감은 잘못된 방향으로 가는 위험한 조치”라고 했다. WHO의 코로나19 대응에 대한 평가는 사태 종식 이후에 해도 늦지 않다. 트럼프는 자금지원 중단 결정을 철회해야 한다. 지금은 전 세계가 코로나19 방역에 온 힘을 모을 때다.
