America’s Calculation Errors

The National Opposition — or the Syrian Opposition, as it is referred to internationally — and those who support it in the Middle East and abroad, wish for Syria and its institutions to collapse, so that it may become a follower of America and the West, and make peace with Israel by letting go of all opposition and resistance. But this bet on Syria’s fall with the use of military force has failed, and it is as a result of the magnitude of force that Syria uses on the ground.

It is also thanks to the months of heroic solidarity that Syria’s army has displayed, as well as the unity of both the nation and army and their many sacrifices. Syrian forces have endured real suffering due to the conditions caused by sanctions imposed upon the country by America, the Europeans, their regional allies and the Arabs.

It has now become apparent to the United States the error and sterility of its calculations and bets, which it has been counting on for over two and a half years. Despite all its efforts, [the U.S.] failed to bring down Syria’s government for its own interests and the interests of the Zionist entity (Israel). The United States offered logistics, intelligence and technical support to the opposition and the armed terrorist groups that fight in Syria. The U.S. has also harnessed its Ottoman ally Erdogan to manage a military operation and put pressure on Syria in order to secure interests and resources.

Fighters have come from all around the world — mercenaries, criminals, bandits, drug dealers, al-Qaida members, former offenders and thieves. They have all been supplied with modern arms, communications equipment, military and field expertise, as well as money and whatever support they may need.

What is more important is that America has made way for its favorite ally, Israel, to intervene in the Syrian crisis and play a main part in it, and has commissioned Israel more than once to bomb military bases and operational stations that belong to the Syrian state and army.

America has been able to stir half the world against what it calls “the violence in Syria,” but did not once utter a word about the violence and crimes committed by their armed groups against families, minorities and those of different religions. America also manipulated the situation of Syrian refugees that fled to neighboring countries such as Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon without ever mentioning the tragic state of Palestinian refugees in Syria.

The U.S. war is by proxy — locally and regionally — but it has yet to achieve its plans for Syria.

America did reap some satisfactory results for itself and its allies, such as exhausting Syria as a community and a country, thereby busying the army even more. Also, it has impacted the unity of the people and revived sectarianism, as well as planted resentment and hatred between Syria and countries that originally participated in Syria’s troubles. These results, however, did not blow up the situation as the United States had hoped. The Syrian army gained noticeable success, and both friends and enemies of Syria admit this. Perhaps fear of new successes [for Syria] and the need to be decisive has pushed Obama to rethink the political compromise and the Geneva Statement.
