It is an outrage that a left-wing party is sympathetic toward a racist president of the United States who characterizes Mexicans as rapists and criminals.
Journalist and National Regeneration Movement* supporter Pedro Miguel revealed that “there are numerous Trump sympathizers and Biden haters in the Lopez Obrador movement. And yes, there are those who prefer Trump because he has more or less left the Fourth Transformation in peace.”** (La Jornada, “Which Way To Go?”, November 6, 2020).
How could some Morenistas justify placing party ideology above national dignity?
Whether it’s President-elect Joseph Biden or President Donald Trump, let’s not kid ourselves. The interests of the U.S. will still be the same. Mexico’s true protection rests in international law, the legal framework of commercial treaties and the cooperation that rules bilateral relations, not just on personal relations.
While President-elect Biden has announced a plan for the regularization of 11 million undocumented immigrants, 5 million of whom are Mexican, and plans to nominate the creator of the DACA program, which protects 6 million Mexicans, to lead the Department of National Security, Trump criminalized immigrants. Trump also turned Mexico into an extension of the Border Patrol in the Usumacinta as MORENA supporters kept silent, with the honorable exception of Porfirio Muñoz Ledo.
How is Trump tolerated when he used tariffs to blackmail Mexico into militarizing its border with Guatemala and to turn Mexican territory into a waiting room for Central Americans seeking asylum in the U.S.?
In today’s world, the violation of a country’s national sovereignty is more subtle and frequent with networks that cross borders than it is with military invasions.
There is an anti-Biden campaign on Mexican social media, to which more than 69% of the population has access, blaming him for the deportations under Barack Obama, accusing him of being an interventionist and even of being a pedophile.
Trump himself tweeted a video on Sept. 17 showing Biden next to the #PedoBiden hashtag, an unfounded accusation.
Internet expert Eloy Garza warned about disinformation in SDP Noticias on Sept. 18 in his article, “QAnon and Conspiracy Theories in Mexico.”
Garza described QAnon as a global alternative movement with 9 million followers that is adding supporters in Mexico. Its conspiracy fantasy, which influenced the presidential campaign in favor of Trump, claims that an elite group of satanic pedophiles rule the world.
“Why are conspiracy theories so attractive to Mexicans?” Garza asks before responding, “We love spreading rumors.”
One example of this is the actor Patricia Navidad, with 195,000 followers on Twitter who, for publicity, claimed that Trump won the 2020 presidential election legally after U.S. media projected a Biden win.
The truth is that there is no evidence of fraud that could have changed the outcome of the presidential election.
On Dec. 8, the deadline expires for the 50 states in the American union to certify the results and that is when Biden can legally be considered president-elect.
* Editor’s Note: The National Regeneration Movement is a left-wing political party in Mexico, also known by its acronym MORENA.
** Editor’s Note: The term “The Fourth Transformation” refers to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s campaign promise in 2018 to eliminate widespread privileged abuse in the country.
