With American elections coming this November, Congress will continue obstructing the liquidation of the prison, and will use all kinds of lies and deception in its political conflict with Obama.

Democrat Ashton Carter will succeed Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense. Is Obama the only one making the decisions regarding nominations and strategies? That doesn’t seem to be the case.

Events have led America by its nose farther and farther away from the Asia Pacific. It will be very difficult for America to fix this imbalance in the years to come.

This decision demonstrates Obama’s lack of clear direction when it comes to the single most serious issue America and its allies are currently faced with: the threat that is the Islamic State.

America’s allies in each of these regions are too used to clear US leadership, within an articulated global vision, to suddenly act as mature strategic players in their own right.

This is a golden opportunity for the U.S. to survey the defense needs and problems of its old ally and take care of these needs.
