Obama to Palestine: The Double Standard

The president of the United States, diplomats and European allies have been frantically trying to prevent the Palestinian government’s request for recognition as a legitimate state member before the United Nations. In order to prevent this request, rough and crude allegations have been made toward the Palestinian leadership; however, no voices of protest have risen against the Nazi Netanyahu, which makes it impossible for negotiations to reach a solid agreement. 17 years at the table of negotiations have passed without receiving anything from Tel Aviv but aggression and invasion attempts that have exhausted the patience of the Palestinians. Palestine was not only banished from their land of origin by Israel but remained a country under oppression, confined to limited territory and denied any rights based on the sophistication of the U.S. military arsenal and the support of the West.
The historic letter written by President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela to the UN secretary-general clearly addresses the ongoing situation. “The empire, in this and many other cases, tries to impose a double standard before the world scenario: The Yankee’s double standard is what violates international rights in Libya, allowing Israel to do whatever it pleases, and it has become the main accomplice of the Palestinian genocide by Zionist barbarianism.”*
Obama’s threat of issuing a veto could become a reality if the Palestinian request receives approval from nine out of the 15 members of the UN Security Council (the five veto-wielding permanent members and the 10 rotating). In order to attain re-election in 2012 — the only reason of great matter for Obama — the abundant wealth of the Zionist lobby becomes primordial. However, it’s of great concern for Obama should he lose the image, carved by the media, as a friend of the Arab revolution who is willing to treat the Islamic people on more kindly terms than his predecessors.
It’s the same Obama that promised, in his speech in Cairo, a new beginning for the Muslim world. He is the same one who said that there would be a new United States for the Arabs, the one who proclaimed to the chambers of the UN in 2010 that next year there would be a new member of the UN, an independent and sovereign state of Palestine. If the wars against Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and the tribal areas of Pakistan and Yemen are not proof enough, the energetic tenant of the White House has taken repressive measures against the Palestinians, who only asked that what was promised to them would be defended.
However, there are new voices that light the gray scenario of the international stage. After Chavez's letter, the warm and sweet voice of the Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, speaker of the inaugural session of the UN General Assembly, was heard: "We believe the time has come for us to have Palestine fully represented as a full member in this forum."
The formal recognition request of Palestine as a state member will be shown on Friday, Sept. 23; however, there is no set date for when they would be officially considered part of the UN General Assembly because of the constant impediment by the United States and Europe. It is difficult to determine if the Palestinian people will be able to obtain approval from at least nine members of the Security Council. On the other hand, the United States will prevent Palestine’s approval as a state member with a veto, which would emphatically prove its the anti-democratic spirit and unconditional support toward Israel. This is the main reason why a peace agreement is impossible in a quartet format: Washington is unqualified to act as an arbitrator. In the UN General Assembly, Palestine has the majority of approval needed to attain the statute of a state observant. With this achievement, Palestine can secure its presence in all agencies of the international sphere, but it would aggravate the state of Israel as the main occupant of a sovereign territory, leading to serious measures before the International Criminal Court for its outrageous war crimes.
Israel is more determined than ever after the Arab revolutions. Within a year, Israel has lost Turkey and Egypt, two very powerful allies, while in the UN, the rejection of Israel’s criminal conduct would be imperative. The heroic Palestinian people will also conquer their cause in the streets. No doubt about it.
