The recent events giving Obama trouble do not seem like major scandals which could shake the White House. Looking at it cynically, they are more like the usual dirty business of politics in America. But a president who, outside of election campaigns, hardly acts like a friendly buddy and often acts as a moral authority is doubly vulnerable.
The attempted whitewash of the Benghazi tragedy, the raging of the IRS against Obama's political opponents and the large-scale spying on a venerable news agency have nothing to do with each other objectively. But they not only provide the Republicans with ammunition, they also expose cracks in the Democrats' camp. By no means do all members of Congress and all senators share the conviction of the president, who has failed to reconcile the forces of inertia in Washington, that he can help the party with left-wing fighting spirit regain a majority in both chambers of Congress. Obama must now take care that he does not become lonely in the White House.
