Obama's Retreat and the Muslim Brotherhood's Stupidity
I was a guest on one of the Egyptian TV channels, hours after the terrorist attack that killed about 70 people in one of the shopping centers in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, for which the Somali al-Shabab movement claimed responsibility. At the time, I said that this event would be a critical moment in the reorientation of America and the Obama administration’s position on the June revolution. Terrorism has reached American and European citizens in an attack perpetrated by a movement that belongs, ideologically and organizationally, to the Muslim Brotherhood, and one they’d been supporting even after Morsi’s fall. America had taken a position antagonistic to the will of the people on June 30, and it hadn’t acknowledged that will, even after the shock of the fall of the regime of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
Also, yesterday the website World Net Daily published the testimony of the U.S. Department of State investigator in Benghazi who is looking into the September 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in that city, which happened while Morsi and the Brotherhood were governing Egypt. He stressed Egypt’s involvement in this incident, which reaffirms the fact that the U.S. administration was sponsoring nothing other than a terrorist group well known for its criminal history, with branches everywhere in the world.
Therefore, I wasn’t surprised by the noticeable retreat in the position of the United States and Obama, as evidenced by the president’s speech to the U.N. General Assembly. Obama openly acknowledged that the interim government that took the reins of the country after June 30 was responding to the wishes of millions of Egyptians who believed the revolution had gone down the wrong path, and that Mohammed Morsi had proven he had no intention or ability to govern in a way that is fully inclusive, despite being a democratically elected president.
Obama denied the accusation that he supported the Brotherhood over the past several years, even after it rose to power. He alleged that America’s interest is in encouraging a government that legitimately reflects the will of the Egyptian people and that [the U.S.] realizes that true democracy entails respect for the rights of minorities, the law, and freedom of expression and assembly. It also requires a strong civil society, and all of these remain among its interests today. Obama also stressed that the United States will continue its constructive relationship with the interim government, which supports core [American] interests like the Camp David Accords and the fight against terrorism.
Obama’s speech means that Egypt is walking the correct path and that on June 30, the will of the people broke all taboos and shattered America’s dreams and illusions of repartitioning the region through a Muslim Brotherhood regime in Egypt. [It also shattered the plan of] implementing territorial schemes at the expense of Egypt’s role and importance. All we hope is that the message reached the Brotherhood both inside and outside of Egypt, and that they discontinue their political stupidity. Obama will swallow the bitterness of his defeat in Egypt, but he won’t abandon America’s strategic interests.
