An international organization in which one man decides practically everything, potentially in every conflict in the world? Welcome to Trump’s "Board of Peace.”
This, too, is something that, a few years ago, would have been dismissed as entertaining but over-the-top fiction if it had appeared in a Hollywood film: The American president establishes a “Board of Peace” of which he is himself the head for an unlimited period of time and in which he essentially has the last word in every decision. It is, in other words, a large United Nations Security Council in which no longer five nations, but instead just man — not even one country — has veto power.
Unelected Bureaucrats
There is also no one on the executive board, which is supposed to lead the new organization’s operations, who has democratic legitimacy except for Donald Trump’s secretary of state. Are Trump and his Make America Great Again people not the ones who take every opportunity to rail against unelected bureaucrats at the international level?
The board is not (yet) a substitute for the U.N., however. As of Thursday, Trump’s world dominance has only been recognized by about 35 countries. They probably are concerned not only with peace in Gaza or in other conflict zones, but also with the chairman’s goodwill. Argentina, for instance, needs money; the Saudis want to do business; and any counterbalance against Russia is useful for Belarus.
By the way, Vladimir Putin is demonstrating again that he is at least as clever as a New York real estate manager. Through the board, he wants to get access to frozen Russian assets in the U.S.
