Denied Entry to America’s Eden
A quick look at what has been transpiring during the current U.N. General Assembly proves there is zero hyperbole here. Driven by sheer arrogance, the Donald Trump administration appears convinced it owns the international body — conveniently forgetting that the U.S. connection to the U.N. is strictly that of a host country and a founding member, no different from any of the other states that launched the organization in 1945.
Yes, it is the host nation. Yes, it is a founding member. But neither distinction gives Washington the right to play gatekeeper, graciously handing out access passes to one nation, while slamming the door in the face of another.
Those who watched Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s address at the general assembly might not have even realized it was pre-recorded. The reason for this is that for the second consecutive year, the Trump administration has withheld entry visas from Abbas and his diplomatic delegation, leaving Abbas no choice but to tape his remarks and ship them off to the "United American Nations" at its chosen headquarters.
Nor did Washington’s hubris stop there. It pulled the exact same maneuver on General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, commander-in-chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, making his visa contingent on agreeing to a U.S.-proposed 90-day ceasefire in the Sudan conflict.
To be clear, he didn't reject the truce out of a desire to prolong the war against the rogue Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo Musa, also known as Hemedti, and his militia. Look a bit closer at the proposed deal, and you'll realize it has nothing to do with genuine American goodwill. Its true aim is to give the renegade warlord time to regroup and rearm, preparing for another assault on Sudan, its people and its resources. And so, Palestinians and Sudanese alike find themselves locked out of "America’s Eden." They knock on the door of the world’s assembly, only to be told by Washington that the international body is now strictly American — right before having the door slammed in their faces.
Stranger still, the Trump administration actually granted entry visas to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his entourage. Pezeshkian promptly took the stage and held up a portrait of Ali Khamenei right from the podium of the "United American Nations" itself. Needless to say, Washington’s arrogant administration didn't hand out those visas out of any goodwill toward Pezeshkian or his delegation. It did so in order to sit down with him — as indeed happened — hoping he might reopen the Strait of Hormuz and save face for an America whose dignity has already been thoroughly lost in the region and before the eyes of the entire world.
