Trump Was Too Cowardly To Fire Zacharia with a Clear ‘You’re Fired!’

Once again, a woman from Trump's inner circle had to step down. But it's not just the president's short-lived press secretary; Trump is also making a sorry spectacle of himself over the matter.

Her tenure was very short: It only lasted five days. The mockery came even faster: Political commentators joked, “Less than half a Scaramucci!” on Friday, mere minutes after Katie Zacharia's tenure as U.S. President Donald Trump’s press secretary ended. This mocking comparison referred to a period of roughly 11 days — the length of time previous record-holder Anthony Scaramucci spent as Trump's propagandist in 2017.

Zacharia's first press conference as the U.S. president’s press secretary had taken place only three days before the media reported the sudden end of her tenure. However, those who dwell on crude gloating are missing two revealing aspects of her departure.

All four Cabinet members who had previously left were women: first, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem; then Attorney General Pam Bondi; Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer; and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Most recently, Kimberly Guilfoyle’s departure as U.S. ambassador to Greece also made bigger headlines than, for example, the transfer of former National Security Adviser Michael Waltz to the United Nations in New York the previous year.

I'd Reconsider ...

The president apparently prefers not to fire his personnel himself. "I said to her, 'Honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider. You think about it, but I would reconsider,’" were reportedly Trump's words to Zacharia. "I said, 'Katie, you know, you don't have to do this if you don't want. She said, 'This is a lot tougher.' I said, ‘Welcome to the world of Trump.’"

And that is the second key aspect: Trump’s signature line, "You're fired!" — his trademark on the reality TV show “The Apprentice” — was, in the end, always just part of his role as a tough negotiator. In real life, however, he appears to cowardly shy away from speaking plainly in one-on-one conversations, time and again.
