Fadlallah: America Should Take its Hands Off Lebanon and Let the Citizens Have Their Freedom

The religious authority Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah noticed that many American personalities, of both the Republican and Democratic parties, from the American Congress and other groups, have been received in Lebanon recently. They repeated their traditional statements, which is that they would not change their position on Lebanon, and would not form agree to any compromise at Lebanon’s expense.

Fadlallah added that “The question begs to be answered about their participation in Israel’s aggression against Lebanon, destroying its infrastructure, and its massacres in which women, children, and elderly civilians were killed and some people were buried alive. This in addition to the air bridge through which America sent smart bombs to kill Lebanese civilians and providing the cluster bombs which are still killing farmers and others.” He continued, “As the cease-fire clause in resolution 1701 is inactive, Israel has a chance to renew its aggression. That is why none of it is sufficient unless America forms a compromise at Lebanon’s expense. But America should take its hands off so that Lebanon’s citizens can have the freedom to decide their own fate.”

Concerning the domestic situation, the religious authority Fadlallah noted, “The environment of blocs, parties, and Lebanese personalities is still agitated by complicated competitions, in which accusations against this faction or that faction are raised, some of which rise to the level of the accusation of grand treason.” He added, “Or that stir up talk of local and regional money being spent to sway the elections one way or another, exploiting the pressing daily needs of the poor, so that fulfilling them is the price for their votes in the ballot boxes. Observers feel that the country is experiencing a political war in which all sectarian and denominational weapons are used, making any talk of national unity a matter of no seriousness.”
