Chubby Climate Change

Overweight people get blamed again: now they’re the cause of climate change. Two authors at the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health in London have determined there’s a connection between climate change and obesity. Overweight people supposedly produce considerably more greenhouse gases than those who aren’t overweight. This study demonstrates two things above all else: how science has degenerated and how amateurish research has become these days.

First off, the researchers accept an unproven assumption. There still is no plausible proof that climate change is actually caused by man. Many scientists (who have been largely muzzled) point to the connection between solar activity and the rise in temperatures, both taking place congruently as shown in the movie “The Great Global Warming Swindle”.

And here’s another point, almost as important as the first: the more hysterical the global warming discussion gets, the more research money flows to the politically agreeable scientists. And this phenomenon is by no means restricted to liberals and ecologists. Conservatives and lobbyists also have their fingers in the soup: as one group calls for more investment in the environment, the other advises we need to expand the use of nuclear energy.

But back to obesity and the researchers’ next unproven thesis. Allegedly, people with a higher body mass index (BMI) are less active than others. But they conveniently neglect to tell us whether that holds true for a professional heavyweight boxer like Vitali Klitschko (BMI=27.7) and other professional athletes. Because overweight people drive less – another unproven assumption – they obviously have more time to be couch potatoes while more active people are driving to the gym, tennis courts or golf links. So much for that argument.

There’s only one inescapable conclusion: the study is a big fat joke.
