On The Palm of Her Hand

First, Sarah Palin blasphemes about “a guy with a teleprompter,” then she’s caught cheating herself. But nothing can stop the “pit bull in lipstick” on her way to the White House.

Sarah Palin was right about one thing, however. When Saturday Night Live comedian Tina Fey announced after the 2008 presidential elections that she would be dropping her Palin skits, the politician said, “I want to make sure she’s holding on to that Sarah outfit. Because she’s gonna need it in the next four years.”

Sixteen months have passed since the election and Sarah Palin is still making sure Fey doesn’t run out of material. The latest episode in a long string of embarrassing political appearances involved a cheat-sheet the one-time vice presidential candidate used in order to get through an interview in Nashville.

Unfortunately for her, she had written crib notes on her left palm; a photographer and many television journalists noticed that as she obviously read from them during the interview.

It was also unfortunate that she had earlier referred to Barack Obama, the man who defeated her and running mate John McCain in 2008, as “a guy with a teleprompter” shortly before she herself was caught cheating.

Comedians also got a bonus from the fact that she hadn’t written notes on any complicated issues, but instead wrote broad and simple terms like “energy,” “budget cuts,” “taxes,” and “lift American spirits.”

These notes are the keywords covering all Palin’s political principles. That she would have to rely on them to get through an interview where all the questions had been pre-approved will be the subject of much media debate.

Palin’s not even prepared for a round of innocent questions, her critics fumed. How can this woman even consider running for president in 2012?

But that’s obviously what she intends to do and she has already succeeded in grabbing the political limelight in America. The ex-governor of Alaska uses her awkwardness to her advantage — that’s something she has done throughout her entire career.

It’s a career that often resembles a roller coaster ride and always shows that Sarah Palin should never be underestimated.

And Saturday Night Live will get more than just a few jokes out of the palm reader episode.
