Pakistan Concerned by U.S. Support to India in SUP

Concern over the support U.S. President Barack Obama expressed for a permanent seat for India in the United Nations Security Council has been expressed in Pakistan’s parliament by unanimously passing a proposal. The government also said that a step like this will affect the balance of power in the region.

The proposal was brought forward by the ruling Pakistan People’s Party MP Ali Shahnaz Vajir Ali and was unanimously passed by the members of the ruling and opposition party in the lower house of the National Assembly.

Along with expressing concern over Obama’s support over India’s bid for a seat, the proposal also stated that if India is given this status then it will affect the balance of power in South Asia.

While talking to reporters at Lahore airport, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi also expressed a similar concern that India’s candidature for permanent membership in the UN Security Council will have a negative impact on the balance of power in the region.

Qureshi said that India cannot become a permanent member of the UN Security Council just with the support of the United States since it requires a two-thirds majority in the world body.
