Guantanamo Is a "Monstrosity," Says Assange

WikiLeaks founder says that the release of documents will bring justice to current and former detainees of Guantanamo.

“The Guantanamo Files, which began being published by WikiLeaks, throw light over this monstrosity of the Bush era which Obama’s administration has decided to continue,”*said Julian Assange exclusively for the Public agency last Monday. Assange’s statement summarizes the importance of the latest leak of the organization, which began to be published last night.

There are thousands of records of current or former prisoners of Guantanamo, Cuba, and other related documents issued by the JFT-GTM (Task Force of Guantanamo) and sent in the form of memorandums to the U.S. Southern Command.

The files report on the state of current prisoners’ health, rebuilding the investigative web that led them to prison, which, when carefully analyzed, reveal that most of the defendants were indicted based on statements from other inmates tortured in Guantanamo and in secret CIA prisons.

A careful review of the documents reveals that the bounty market promoted by the United States led to the detention of innocent men and boys because of accusations made by allies interested in the cash rewards.

They also reveal how the “opinions” suggesting whether or not Guantanamo prisoners should be released were not only decided upon by the task force but also by those criminal investigation officers and psychologists in charge who were responsible for evaluating how the obtained information should be used in other interviews.

“The documents reveal vast new information about these detainees and, in particular, the shoddy and unreliable nature of the ‘evidence’ used to justify their due-process-free detentions.”

“Hundreds of inmates who turned out to have no serious terror links were held without trial, based on vague or inaccurate information, including accounts from unreliable fellow detainees or statements from men who had been abused or tortured,” said Assange.

“It’s time to rekindle the public discourse about the Guantanamo prison, hoping that we can finally do something to bring justice to this establishment,” said the founder of WikiLeaks who also said “Guantanamo is used for laundering people to an offshore haven which doesn’t follow the rule of law.”

The comparison with money laundering in which international banks “conceal” suspicious features is used by Assange due to the fact that Guantanamo conceals from society the true story about these arrests in order to justify the criminal policy of the government and the illegal funds used for detention.

Assange made a point to highlight that his partner mediums for releasing this information are the Washington Post, U.S.; El Pais, Spain; the Telegraph, U.K. the magazine Der Spiegel, Germany; Le Monde, France; the Aftonbladet, Sweden; and Italy’s La Repubblica.

The reason is, although they are official partners, newspapers such as The New York Times from the United States, and the Guardian from the U.K. published reports yesterday based on the same secret documents delivered by another source who preferred to remain anonymous.

“The release of the documents is important to the public, current and former detainees. Many of them have been imprisoned for years without a formal trial and based on unreliable evidences.”
