The anti-imperialism of the Cold War is, despite all the abuses the American government has caused, a thing of the past. Manipulation and romanticizing had a hand in the demonization of anything that reeked of Uncle Sam. The most inoffensive assistance and best intentions were chalked up to plans of domination and attempts at brainwashing to prevent any hint of social dissent. The United States was the giant monster — that is, until the paradigms of socialism finally began to collapse and show their true colors.

In most of the cases of socialism that have survived, such as China, they have moved forward based on capitalist theories. The tearing of the veil has resulted in the assistance of a great power, thanks to which there have been many advances in the political and administrative order, not to mention the radical change in standards of living for many families.

Instead of demonizing the United States for its support of social reform movements in favor of the education system, against corruption and cleaning up the judicial power, we should be congratulating them. This is the type of intervention that any nation should accept from another, more developed nation. But what happens is that political interests cannot agree upon this kind of second-rate patriotism.

Yet, for its social and economic developments and the strength of its institutions, the United States is the mirror of the world. And if this great nation can give us a small hand in areas that necessitate aid, we really can only be grateful. In some cases any praise is highly valued. What wouldn’t any Dominican — including President Leonel Fernandez — give for a date with Barack Obama or to meet with his wife, Michelle? Whatever involvement that is in favor of welfare and development will be positive.

El antiimperialismo de la Guerra Fría es, con todo y los abusos en que incurrieron Gobiernos estadounidenses, un asunto del pasado. La manipulación y el romanticismo tuvieron mucho que ver con la satanización de todo lo que oliera al Tío Sam. Hasta la asistencia más inofensiva y mejor intencionada se inscribía dentro de un plan de dominación y lavado de cerebro con el propósito de impedir cualquier atisbo de protesta social. Estados Unidos fue el gran monstruo hasta que los paradigmas del socialismo comenzaron a derrumbarse en la medida en que, como la piel de zapa, enseñaban su verdadero rostro. En tanto los que han sobrevivido, como el caso de China, ha sido sobre la base de las teorías del capitalismo. En la medida que el velo se ha corrido más se valora la asistencia de una potencia, gracias a la cual es mucho lo que se ha avanzado en el ordenamiento político y administrativo, sin hablar de las muchas familias que han cambiado radicalmente sus condiciones de vida. Antes que satanizarlo por su apoyo a luchas sociales en favor del sistema educativo, contra la corrupción, y el adecentamiento del Poder Judicial lo que se tiene es que congratularlo. Se trata del tipo de intromisión que cualquier nación agradece de otra más desarrollada. Lo que pasa es que como no conviene a intereses políticos nos surge ese patriotismo de pacotilla. Por su desarrollo social y económico y la solidez de sus instituciones Estados Unidos es el espejo del mundo. Y si esa gran nación nos puede dar una manito en aspectos que en verdad necesitamos no tenemos más que agradecérselo. En ocasiones se valora mucho cualquier elogio. ¿Qué no daría cualquier dominicano, incluyendo al presidente Leonel Fernández, por una cita con Barack Obama o por participar en un encuentro con su esposa Michelle? Siempre que sea en favor del bienestar y el desarrollo cualquier intromisión será positiva.
