The Triumph of Nonsense

Mitt Romney is looking for supporters who have audience appeal. But anyone who has a supporter like real estate magnate Donald Trump truly needs no enemies.

Victory for Mitt Romney. After his Texas win, he now officially has enough delegates to be named the Republican Party’s nominee for president at their convention. Although he was the presumptive favorite right from the start, he still had to spend $300 million and a great deal of time to win out over a colorful mass of candidates, none of whom would have stood a chance of being elected to anything in Germany, even in a small town election.

Romney isn’t even popular with Republicans, as evidenced by the primary elections themselves. As a result, Romney takes up with anyone willing to publicly support him — from his erstwhile opponent Rick Santorum to George W. Bush, on to actor Chuck Norris and down to (although it’s difficult to believe) the totally loony real estate predator Donald Trump, the guy who loves to cram the world full of his phallic towers.

Beside the Trump Towers, Trump has one other obsession: To convince people Barack Obama isn’t really American, having been born in Kenya or Indonesia or God alone knows where else, and is thus ineligible to serve as president of the United States. Trump never misses an opportunity to trumpet these totally nonsensical, often racist and completely discredited theories whenever he can. And what time and place could have been better than on the evening of Romney’s Texas triumph at a victory dinner for the governor hosted by Donald Trump himself? Anyone who has friends like that truly doesn’t deserve any enemies, a fact amply demonstrated by the interview Trump did with Wolf Blitzer.
